Are rural placements compulsory on the General Pathway?

No. If you study on the General Pathway, you can complete your training in rural, remote or metropolitan settings. However, there are restrictions on General Pathway students in terms of training in areas in need of doctors.

If you are on the General Pathway, you will be able to nominate how you fulfil your 12-month training pathway requirement. You have the following options:

  • 12 months in a non-capital city
  • 12 months comprising any two of the following:

o 6 months in a rural location
o 6 months in an outer metropolitan location
o 6 months in a non-capital city
